Janene, I can't advise you too much, since it really sounds like you have some medical problem. Read about <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" title="About Muscle Cramps (About.com - new window)" href="http://sportsmedicine.about.com/od/legpainandinjuries/a/muscle_spasms.htm" rel="nofollow">muscle cramps</a>, because my guess it's the center of your problem.

Hi, I am 33 and also suffer from this need to sleep. Most recently it has got worse, I have taken time off work for it (2 weeks). My appitite has dived (although not normally good) i had hot sweats and dizzyness (this has now passed - doctor put it down to viral infection) the over sleeping is just as bad. I have been sleeping from 10 at night to 9 am and then napping from 1pm till 4/5 ish. I need to get back to work but drive a lot for work and am worried. The doctor did blood tests and said the readings that show Liver was high and also a reading to show inflammation was high, He said i need another test in 3 weeks for Hep (omg i have never put myself at risk for this - Major panic ) gamma reading and esr. I now am worried more than ever> i have loads to be doing have own house and good job, i am not lazy but the last month, i actuall dont care and just feel i need to sleep. I do not drink heaverly or smoke at all, and i do not take drugs. The doctor was vage in what i should be doing or not doing to help myself and just said more tests in 3 weeks, I dont know if i should go to work or not. I am clueless as to what to do. But i know that something isnt right. I also get terrrible cramps in the back of my legs, as in scream and cry out loud cramps where i cannot move. Any thoughts?

Well, Apple, research shows a link between abnormal sleep patterns (either sleep deprivation or oversleeping) and fatal diseases. Here's one place where you can read about some of these studies: <a target="_blank" href="http://organizedwisdom.com/Heart_Disease_and_Oversleeping" rel="nofollow">Heart Disease and Oversleeping</a> (new window).

Well, Dave, if I understand right:

1. You have some degree of Sleep Apnea - trouble breathing during sleep.
2. You have some emotional issues - stress, anxiety, maybe depression.
3. You go to sleep really late for some reason (why go to bed at 1AM?)

A few suggestions:

1. Do your best to <a target="_blank" title="The Importance of Going to Bed Early (on EnergyAndMotivation.com in a new window)" href="http://energyandmotivation.com/3309/going-to-bed-early-video/" rel="dofollow" rel="nofollow">go to bed early</a>, like before 11PM.

2. Do what you can to <a title="How to Stop Snoring and Night Sweating" href="http://a-sleep.com/40/sleep-apnea-and-snoring/" rel="nofollow">open your airways</a> before sleep.

3. Practice some relaxation technique, like meditation, especially before bedtime.

4. Generally I'd say you've got to deal with your emotional issues, learn to relax and appreciate life.

5. Make sure to follow some basic <a target="_blank" title="How to Get More Energy from Less Sleep (on EnergyAndMotivation.com in a new window)" href="http://energyandmotivation.com/8/more-energy-less-sleep/" rel="dofollow" rel="nofollow">better sleep guidelines</a>.

Of course, don't forget to follow the tips in the above post, and set some short term goals, like: "I go to sleep by midnight" or "I drink only water or herbal tea after 6PM".

I really hope I could help,

Thanks rotam, i try to answer your questions..

How old are you?
28How long do you sleep? 10hrs+
What time do you go to sleep and what time do you wake up? 1am - wake up 11,12 sometimes 10am.

Do you remember a time when you used to sleep less? What was different then? I have always overslept since i was a teenager. I used to skip school due to the oversleeping and i have lost about 10 jobs since leaving school due to oversleeping. I grind my teeth heavily when i sleep too. I have just started going to the dentist and i now wear a night guardfor my teeth but my oversleeping makes me anxious because i miss most of the day.

Do you drink? sometimes, very small mounts- 1 glass of wine or 2 beers

Do you take any medications? hayfever tablets

Do you smoke? no

let me know if theres any more questions plese. thankyou for your time.

Hi, i'm a 24 year old working student and currently suffering from over sleeping. I tend to sleep atleast 11-13 hours a day and even after a few home based work i can fall asleep. I tend to push myself to go out and do some field work but when i get back home I still lose to my sleeping habits. I tried sleeping by 1130 1200 but it only leads to me tossing and turning until 3 - 4 am. I eat a balanced diet of food since our family is health conscious so there is no problems there. I just need to lessen my sleeping time since both my work and school are suffering for it, luckily I usually pull through by actually avoiding sleep. I'm tempted to try some sleeping pills but since I grew up with a family that isn't really favoring medicines to such a disorder I couldn't. Is it really something with my discipline or is there really something wrong with me?

I know nothing about high calcium levels and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperparathyroidism" rel="nofollow">Hyperparathyroidism (Wikipedia)</a>. About your oversleeping problem, it sounds like a motivational / emotional problem. Try to remember if there was some major change in your life on Nov '08. Do your best to follow my tips on this post and others and tell me how it works.

Hello,

I have difficulty sleeping for an appropriate amount of time. It's quite commong for me to sleep for 10 hours on work days (not getting up until the last minute to get to work on time) and sometimes even longer on days off from work. In fact, the other day, which was a day off from work, I slept for about 15 hours straight.
I don't usually have to exert myself that much at all at work, but there is one problem that may be a factor; a high calcium level in my blood testing. My doctor had my parathyroid tested due to the calcium, but that came back normal.
Also, in November 2008 I remember inexplicably starting to have this problem. It seems like it just hit me out of no where. Before then, I used to be able to sleep for 8 hours and be quite well-rested.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Well Orwell, seems like you've answered your own question. However, I know how hard it can be to go to sleep early. It's something I sometimes struggle with myself...

From time to time I'd work on the PC until late and then watch TV for 2-3 hours before I go to sleep. I won't oversleep, but I'd wake up tired and then tell myself that I won't do it again (which lasts some time until my next glitch).

Some suggest setting a bedtime alarm - to tell you to go to sleep. That's an idea, but I don't think it would work for me personally.

I'd say it all comes down to goals and motivation. You need to convince yourself that if you sleep well and wake up early you will be more energetic, happier, healthier and also more succesful as result.

Was that helpful? People, any other ideas?
