In the same way you might wait for the bus to show up, Mr. Sandman might not appear when he is expected or needed.
You may expect him around 10p.m. and he won’t appear until, early the next morning, maybe just before it’s time to get up. You might even not sleep at all. And, just like those inconsiderate people mentioned above, he will show up later when you need to be wide awake, just begging for a little bit of your attention.
If you have been having trouble sleeping, you know you need some help.
Insomnia, as well as most other sleep disorders, can often times be “cured” with simple methods. Before you reach for that stiff night cap, an over-the-counter sleeping aid or call the doctor for a sleeping pill, try some simple things first…
Sometimes the easiest and most obvious suggestions are safer.
Here are 3 simple ways to ‘cure insomnia’:
Darkness Is King!
To begin with, check that your room is at the right temperature and is not filled with flickering lights. I once knew a lady who had trouble sleeping and really restless nights, until one night her alarm clock got unplugged by accident. She slept like a baby that night!
The alarm clock, with its bright light, was disturbing her sleep and she did not even realize it. Look at possible sources of light if you suspect that is one reason.
Be cool!
The temperature of the room should be cool, but not cold – you might need a blanket, but not a parka and mittens. Again, some people are more sensitive to temperature than others. For instance, some people cannot sleep at all, if their feet are cold. (I can’t, socks are necessary in when the floor feels cold!)
Silence Is Golden!
Also, make sure that your bedroom is quiet: dogs barking, the dripping faucet that the plumber claimed to have fixed, anything that might be bothersome enough, irritating your subconscious.
If any kind of sound is disrupting your sleep, consider earplugs or a white noise machine. Even a fan will drown some of these sounds out and will circulate the air in the room as well.
There! Three very simple and basic tips on how to cure insomnia! Unless you have really serious problems this might be all you need.

That’s not so easy when you have insanely inconsiderate siblings/parents. I had the worst sleep last night and I’m so dead tired right now. I tried napping, but I was woken up by what sounded like 6 people in the house. It was actually only 2. They were rustling shopping bags, turning the taps on every 5 seconds, boiling the kettle, turning the TV up loudly, slamming doors, stomping around, coughing, laughing, and talking so loudly. And not to mention my 3 cats who had found a stray piece of dried pasta and were kicking it around on the hardwood floors outside of my bedroom. The worst part is my sister kept saying to the cats “shhh!” so they could be quiet for me because she knew I had an awful sleep last night. She was louder than they were. And people wonder why I’m irritable.
