Excessive Sleep

Why do You Oversleep and How to Stop Oversleeping

If you are in the habit of oversleeping, you're not alone. I myself used to oversleep often, most of my life...

Believe me, I know how embarrassing and frustrating it can be not to be able to control yourself, to be chronically late and to waste lots of precious time on sleep.

If you want to be able to wake up refreshed and on time, you must first understand what is causing you to oversleep...

Causes of Excessive Sleep

From my understanding, oversleeping comes from a combination of two main factors that can be summed up as:

1. Poor sleep - meaning that you're not getting enough rest from your sleep. If you feel tired after 7-8 hours of sleep, there's a good chance that what you need is not more sleep but BETTER sleep.

Your sleep may be damaged by a physical sleep disorder. (I myself also had to overcome snoring and night sweating as part of the process.)

Most likely, though, is that you don't sleep well because of bad habits, emotional issues or outside conditions - things like stress, poor nutrition, shift work or a noisy environment.

2. Lack of motivation - simply put - when the clock rings, you PREFER to stay in bed than face the day (whether you'll admit it or not).

These two factors work together to keep you in bed, because the more tired you are, the more "mental power" you need in order to overcome the temptation to oversleep...

How to Stop Oversleeping

So there are two main areas that you need to work on - your habits and your mindset...

Here are a few tips to get you started:

1. Change the way you think about sleep

If you "love to sleep", you have to start thinking about sleep as something you must do, but would have done better without.

Stop making excuses like - "I need more sleep than the average person". You should be convince that you can sleep less and have more energy than you have now, which is most likely true.

2. Motivate yourself to stop oversleeping

Oversleeping is like any other addiction, and you have to be highly motivated and absolutely convinced that you WANT to overcome it.

Come up with at least one strong reason WHY you want to sleep less. It might help to write it down and read it to yourself daily.

3. Set (and stick) to a steady sleep schedule

It's best if you can go to sleep and wake up at the same times every day. At least do you best to wake up at the same time, no matter how long you had slept...

Put the clock away from bed, set a wake up call, ask someone to throw you out of bed, whatever you need to do to make sure you wake up on time.

4. Reduce sleep gradually

If you sleep 10 hours every night, don't move to 7 hours all at once. Reduce 30-60 minutes every week or so.

Don't beat yourself up when you fail, because it might only make things worse. Just learn from your mistakes and come up with a plan for the next day.

5. Improve your sleep

There are many simple things you can do to raise the quality of your sleep, which will allow you to get more energy from less sleep...

The End Tiredness Program is one of the best resources I know when it comes to sleep optimization (plus much more).

If you're ready to take some action to overcome your oversleeping habit, and start enjoying more energy and time in your life, then I warmly recommend that you get yourself a copy of it.
