Breathing Problems During Sleep

'How I Got Rid of My Sleep Apnea and Stopped Snoring'

My oversleeping problem was caused (also) by a mild case of Sleep Apnea.

I know that, because I used to snore heavily
, and I sometimes woke up in the middle of the night, having to change my sweat-soaked shirt.

Snoring and Sleep Apnea are not the same thing, yet they share similar causes, effects and solutions...

Common causes of snoring
are
drinking alcohol, especially close to bed time, obesity, and smoking. However, snoring can be a sign of Sleep Apnea and in fact, heavy snoring can also cause Sleep Apnea.

Of course, both Snoring and Sleep Apnea can severely damage the quality of your sleep (Not just your partner's :-)

In a minute I'll tell you how I stopped sweating and snoring, but first...

What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep Apnea is considered a life-threatening sleep disorder. Although it is quite common (about 10% of the population), most people who has it will never know about it their entire life.

While asleep, people with Sleep Apnea stop breathing for periods of 10 seconds of more, sometimes up to hundreds of times a night.
These pauses in oxygen supply to the brain put them at high risk of high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke.

Do you (or your partner) have Sleep Apnea?

Besides heavy snoring, a few common signs are...

- Excessive tiredness and daytime sleepiness, even after "enough" sleep.

- Waking up
suddenly chocking or gasping for air.
- Excessive sweating during sleep.
Waking up with headache.

If you suspect that you have Sleep Apnea, I recommend that you consult a doctor.

In severe cases, a doctor might recommend that you put on an oral appliance
(mouthpiece), or an air mask, known as CPAP (Continuous Positive Air Pressure) when you go to sleep. Rarely the solution is surgery.

However, if you have a 'mild' case of Sleep Apnea, like I had, you may be able to treat it by yourself, as you'd treat snoring.

Solutions and Remedies for Snoring

You can try treating the snoring itself...

- As simple as it may sound, before you go to sleep, go to the bathroom and 'open your airways' (especially if you smoke). This could at least reduce the intensity of your snoring.

 - Try to get yourself used to sleeping on your side, or 'force yourself' to do that. You can either elevate the head of the bed, by placing books under the mattress, or get yourself a Snore-No-More Pillow

- Try some of the numerous remedies for snoring. Some of them are nasal strips, nose sprays, and anti-snoring pills, that you can find in most drugstores.

Depending on the cause of your snoring and its intensity, any of the above may not solve the problem completely, if at all.

Better yet, you can treat the causes of snoring...

Unsurprisingly, a healthy lifestyle will reduce the chance of snoring. A person who's in great shape and 'stress-free' is not likely to snore. So the least you can do is...

- Avoid drinking alcohol or smoking, at least a few hours before sleep.

- Loose some weight (In most cases 10% will do).

- Reduce stress. At least learn to relax your mind and body before sleep.

My favorite solution -
train yourself to stop snoring...

Turns out that there are
short and simple exercises that can open up your throat, relax your jaw, strengthen your tong and so on. My wife and I couldn't believe it, but after years of suffering from snoring (and night sweating), I've actually 'cured' my Sleep Apnea and snoring.

Withing a week of doing the exercise extensively, I stopped sweating, A week or two later, my wife told me I don't snore anymore.

So before anything else...

I strongly recommend that you try the
